From Persia to Zeeland

My name is Niloo, and I’m the proud owner of Baran Catering here in Zeeland, where I bring the rich flavors of Persian cuisine to the Netherlands. Originally from Iran and with a background in chemistry, I spent several years working in labs. However, my passion for a more creative path led me to transition into hospitality, allowing me to share a part of my heritage through food.

Before moving to the Netherlands, I lived in the UK with my husband, who was completing his PhD. After he finished, he was offered a good job opportunity in Zeeland. We saw it as a chance to experience a new culture and way of life, though we knew starting over wouldn’t be easy. Facing challenges and making the best out of them is a key part of life, and that’s what we’re doing here in Zeeland.

One of the things I find truly special about Zeeland is its natural beauty. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the strength of the people, gives it a unique charm. Building a social network here has been challenging, especially with most international events happening up north. It can feel isolating without a strong social circle, especially as someone used to a multicultural environment. Learning Dutch and understanding even basic phrases have made a big difference in helping me feel connected. I’ve realized that building a life here takes resilience, but curiosity and effort are essential for a sense of belonging.

For other internationals, my advice is to approach this experience with curiosity and adaptability. Embracing the differences makes the world more interesting and beautiful. Life as an expat has its challenges, especially being away from family, but exploring a new way of life is incredibly enriching.

A Persian saying that resonates with me is, ‘Even if the road is hard, it’s better to keep moving than to sit still.’ It reminds me that the effort itself is valuable, and moving forward is always worthwhile, even when the goal is far away.

In five years, I hope my catering business has grown, with a small team and loyal clients, and that I’ll have begun writing my book capturing the journey of my life, a path that has been anything but straightforward, filled with ups and downs, but also full of hope, love, and incredible experiences. Most importantly, I hope to see my parents here more often in this place that I now call home!
