Your Dutch Taxes Made Easy
Understanding the Dutch tax system is essential for managing your finances properly—but it can also be stressful and time-consuming, especially for expats. At TaxSavers, we simplify your tax matters by guiding you step by step—saving you time, stress, and money.
Key terms to know about the Dutch tax system:
Belastingdienst and the blue envelopes
The Dutch Tax Office (Belastingdienst) sends important letters in Dutch via the well-known blue envelopes. If you don’t respond on time, you risk receiving a fine.
Tax boxes
In the Netherlands, your income is divided into three “boxes.” Your final tax amount is calculated based on the total income across these boxes:
• Box 1 – Income from employment and home ownership
• Box 2 – Income from substantial interest
• Box 3 – Savings and investments
Tax return
As an individual in the Netherlands, you're responsible for filing your own tax return. This is essential if you want to claim money back—for example, from income tax, inheritance tax, or gift tax.
Deductions and tax credits
If eligible, you can benefit from deductions like mortgage interest or tax credits such as the labor tax credit. Knowing and applying these can significantly reduce your tax burden.
30% ruling
This tax advantage is designed for highly skilled migrants recruited from abroad. It allows you to receive 30% of your gross salary tax-free.
M-form
A detailed migration form (in Dutch) required for newcomers to the Netherlands. You’ll need to report both your Dutch and foreign income and assets.
Important tax dates to remember:
• January 1 – Start of new legislative changes announced on Prinsjesdag
• March 1 – Start of the income tax return period
• May 1 – Deadline to apply for an extension on your tax return
• August 31 – Deadline to apply for benefits
• 3rd Tuesday of September (Prinsjesdag) – National budget announcement
• September 30 – Deadline to reclaim VAT on EU business expenses
