Cross-Border Working
What is required
Crossing the border to work. A cross-border worker lives in one EU Member State and works in another. They usually return home daily, but at least once per week. It is important to fully understand the impact of cross-border employment e.g. having the right to equal treatment, access to healthcare and social welfare.
If you live in another member State of the EU (for instance Belgium or Germany) and you work in the Netherlands, you can be considered a cross border worker. You can get a residence sticker in your passport.
In order to be considered a cross border worker, the following conditions apply:
- You live in another Member State of the EU (for instance Belgium or Germany) with a valid residence permit for that country.
- You work in the Netherlands.
- You return to your place of residence in that other member state at least once a week.
- You are only allowed to work in the Netherlands if you have a Citizen Service Number (BSN). This is issued at the municipality when you register in the Register of Non-residents (RNI).
